Battle BlackBerry Brothers: BB Z30 vs BB Z10 vs BB Q10
KYMI pits the new and improved BB Z30 against the high-end BB Z10 touch phone and the functional QWERTY BB Q10
BlackBerry is hoping to get back into the smartphone game with a bang - and a number of new-age handsets. The much awaited BB Z30 takes on from where the fully touch enabled BB Z10 and the QWERTY BB Q10 left off. We compare the three BlackBerry smartphones to find out just how much of an improvement the BB Z30 is from its elder siblings.
BB Z30: 140 x 72 x 9.4mm, 170g
BB Z10: 129.5 x 66.0 x 8.89mm, 136g
BB Q10: 119.6 x 66.8 x 10.4mm, 139g
BlackBerry has always been known for its build quality and on this front, it has stood its ground - with amazing results. Not only are its handsets strong, sturdy and durable, they look and feel premium. Blackberry's signature style of straighter lines and barely there curves on its high-end offerings appeal to the senses and give the phones a neat, clean appearance.
The BB Z30 sports the same form factor as the Z10, but with a slightly redesigned chassis and a larger display. Instead of the sharper edges of the Z10, the Z30 packs in a design with softer corners. While its form makes it comfortable to use, BlackBerry's use of ‘Glass Weave’ gives the Z30 a premium build.
The more angular BB Z10 is a good looking device in its own right. It is sleek and its slimness makes it easy to carry around and use. Its speaks of premium build quality and its checkered and skid proof back keeps it from slipping out of one's hands.
The one feature that sets the BB Q10 most apart from its competitors is its immensely functional QWERTY keypad. Though it is hardly as slim as its siblings, the BB Q10 is probably the best looking QWERTY handset in the market. A touch screen and a physical keypad blend beautifully in this well sized device. Its curved edges make it comfortable to hold and pocket. The steel band around its middle, its glass weave back plate and its Kevlar coating make the phone both durable and sophisticated.
With premium build quality on all three handsets, the form round ends in a draw.
BlackBerry has prepped the Z30 with a 5-inch Super AMOLED display with a HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a pixel density of 295ppi. The handset is designed for more power and gaming than ever before and packs in some gorgeous imagery. Its size makes it perfect for videos and web browsing as well.
Those BlackBerry loyalists who have been waiting for a device from the tech giant which sports a large 5-inch display can rejoice, for the BB Z30's screen is large, clear and sharp. Though some users are sure to be disappointed by the lack of a Full HD display on the BB Z30, and would certainly desire a higher pixel density on the handset, all is not lost. BlackBerry's latest creation is certainly worth writing home about with its good viewing angles and its anti-reflective coating. One has no trouble viewing the handset outdoors, in bright sunlight.
The BB Z10 ships with a smaller 4.2-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels and a pixel density of 355ppi. The handset offers users sharp images with bright colours and deep contrasts.
BlackBerry has given the Q10 a 3.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 720 x 720 pixels and a pixel density of 328ppi. Pictures and texts are clear, well defined and vibrant on the handset, making it the perfect device for texting, emailing and basic web browsing.
Where the Z30's display scores for size, the Z10's screen wins brownie points for its pixel density. This round ends in a draw between the Z30 and the Z10.
