Published on Jul 29, 2010

Vodafone Essar voiced intentions to unveil its 3G services in India by 2010 end, as confirmed by a top company official. However, a broader range of 3G services would be available by March 2011.

"We are ready to launch 3G services in nine circles by this year-end. We are waiting for spectrum allocation. As soon as we get the spectrum, we will be able to launch our services," said Marten Pieters, Vodafone Essar CEO and Managing Director.

Vodafone has already invested about Rs. 11,617 crore for acquiring 3G spectrum in 9 circles during the recent 3G auctions. The circles included Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra & Goa, Chennai and Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh (East) and West Bengal, which covered more than 60% of the company's existing client base.

During the last quarter of 2007, major mobile operators in India - Vodafone Essar, Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular, had made up their mind to contribute jointly for creation of an independent firm, Indus Towers, by hiving off their towers.

Vodafone further stated that it supports mergers and acquisitions only when the market conditions are favorable and offer value to the shareholders as well as the company.
