Philips x513 review

Published on Oct 21, 2011

Philips is a name that has been synonymous more with electronical appliances than mobile phones. But, the electronics has unveiled its range of mobile phones called the Xenium range in India.

Philips has trademarked the range with a feature that is quite unique – it has endowed its phones with super-powerful batteries that hold out the promise of extended talktime and standby time.

Philips has arrived on the scene quite late, the reason being its failed cellphone innings a decade ago. While Philips shied away from this industry, it has transformed into quite a powerhouse. The Indian mobile industry now boasts of not only top-end international phones but also domestic players such as Spice and Micromax, which have come up with competitive phones.

Therefore, to make a mark, the brand had to come out with something that stood out in the market. The Philips x513 can be called an effort on the same part.

The x513 offers a 2.2-inch TFT LCD along with features such as a 2-megapixel camera and 16 GB extendable storage. But one feature that stands out the most is its gargantuan 2000-mAh battery.

Look and feel

Weighing in a bit on the heavier side, at 132g, the Philips x513 looks a tad bulky. But one needn’t be surprised as most of its bodyweight is due to its large battery. But once you get past that, the handset seems quite an impressive one. Its metallic body and mirror display add shine to the handset.

A 2.2-inch TFT LCD doesn’t disappoint either. The phone, with quite an average 112 x 47.6 x 15.6mm dimensions (except the large width), is a bar phone which is curved at the back.

Overall, in the form factor section, the phone impresses with its sheen, looks and feel is good but we do feel the handset can perform better in the weight department.

Features and Interface

The handset comes with a 12-key keypad. While the number pad has a plasticky feel, the call, call end left-side key and right side key located on the metallic part of the handset along with a central menu again have a feel good factor. In fact, the silver lining around the central button pokes out to a user’s delight.

The handset has a USB/Charger port located at the bottom. The Volume increase/decrease buttons are located at the side of the handset. The interface of the Philips x513 has been designed with a glowy factor in mind. Whether it is the wallpaper or the menu icons, everything glows as you use it. The handset comes with to themes – a black one and a white one. We like the white one better for its soft icons.
