Fun and functionality is not restricted to just smartphones, we find out on a ride with Spice Knight

Published on Jan 17, 2012

The feature-rich phones market in India has boomed, blurring the lines between a smartphone and smart feature phones. So, if you thought that all the fun and functions were reserved for smartphones, wait till you get on board the Spice Knight M-6900.

Spice Knight comes packed neatly in a grey box along with a Spice travel charger, spice battery (1400 mAh), earphone, USB Cable, User’s manual and a pouch.

Display and Design

Spice has experimented with various designs in the past to cater to a mass audience. We have seen several examples in the form of Spice Popkorn, super smooth Spice Flo, Spice Transformer to name a few.

With Spice Knight, the company brings on board a giant 8.8 cm HVGA capacitive touch phone for the 'big screen' lovers. The smooth touch phone gives a fast response and quick access to all the favorite utilities by a single touch. Be sure to remove the protective film from the screen though, as it can become a little harder to work with that.

Measuring 116mmx62.5mmx11.6mm, Spice Knight M-6900 weighs 167g and is quite a handful. The device sports a neat metallic look with a single hard button on the front to access menu/center.

The power key is located on the top of the device with the earpiece on the top right-hand side. A 3.2-megapixel camera dominates the rear side of the device while the  headset connector and a charging port rest on the side.

Spice Knight comes with 8 homescreens which gives you ample space to customize your preferences. On top of that you also have the choice of placing your favorite features on the main desktop by dragging them from the shortcut panel which is available on the left hand side. There is also a option for resizing and repositioning the icons anywhere on the screen by simply selecting the icon and long pressing it.

On the top of the screen various icons like signal strength, battery, time and profile mode can be seen. There are also some handy features like, when your Knight is low on energy, you receive a warning tone and a message letting you know that you need to recharge the battery.

Spice Knight brings a onscreen qwerty keypad which comes in handy specially during texting a message and typing on the internet. Talking about the SMS, Spice Knight lets you schedule a message to a particular recipient at a time pre-defined by you. So, whether it is Diwali wishes or New Year greetings, you can schedule the message days in advance.

Also there is a option for backing up the SMS you would like to retain. You can choose to back up inbox, drafts, outbox and sent messages folder in the memory card.

SPICE KNIGHT

The WOW factor

Spice Knight comes integrated with SRS WOW HD Music. We loved the SRS HD effect that provides stereo enhancements which basically raises the audio effect and widens the sound. The SRS WOWHD does not only assure you a amazing experience while listening to your favorite music but also provides sound effects options  like Normal, Bass, Treble, Blue, Classic, Hip Hop, Jazz, Voice and Rock to suit your taste. We have reviewed SRS WOW equipped devices before and Spice Knight definitely rides high up on our list of mid-range music phones.

For the 3D fans, Spice Knight also brings a enhanced 3D user interface. You have two options under the 3D settings that you can explore - tornado and star travel. While tornado was fun to play around with, we liked the Star travel more, simply because it was easy to read and navigate.

Spice Knight users can also enjoy watching TV and streaming youtube videos. The big screen and the SRS WOW combine to provide a rich viewing experience and a great companion when you are traveling.

Calling the Knight

True to its name, Spice Knight will come to your rescue no matter where you are. The phone supports dialing international emergency phone number such as 112 and 911. You can dial an emergency call in any country or region regardless of SIM card inserted ( when the phone is located within the coverage of the GSM network). On the contact list contact numbers of police, fire, ambulance have been pre-loaded.

We were quite impressed with the call quality on Spice Knight. The voice on the receiver as well the recipient end were crystal clear. The device comes with a proximity sensor which comes in quite handy when you are on the call, as it automatically turn off the screen to avoid accidental popping of another app when your ear touches the screen. Some may find it rather annoying as you have to continuously tap on the 'unlock' on the screen to abort a call and redial.

As we mentioned before, Spice Knight is a dual sim phone, so when you are dialing a number the 'call option' allows you to select the sim you want to use for the function. After punching in the number simply press on the call button with 'M'- for using master sim or 'S' for using the slave sim.

The phone also comes with a auto voice recorder. So, anytime you call anybody at the end of the call - a message pops up asking - if you want to save the conversation. We would suggest to turn off the auto-recorder as it can be quite annoying to press cancel after every conversation and moreover if you miss it, the conversation automatically gets recorded and saved.
