Apple on Friday ended Nokia's 15-year reign at the top of the global smartphone market. While Nokia profits are touching the rock bottom, Apple has almost double its profits from the last year. It now stands with 18.5% market share, which actually means that every fifth smartphone user is using an Apple phone.

So what does this change for us?

India has forever been a Nokia-dominated market. Over the years, we have grown up to trust Nokia to provide us with the best in phones. Although brands such as Apple have still not gained as mug standing as they have abroad, the smartphone game here is also set to change.

With Nokia slowly fading onto oblivion, more and more manufacturers are venturing in the smartphone market. In fact, manufacturers that were little known just six years back, such as Spice and Micromax have started to make a dent on Nokia's earnings there.

The position that Nokia is in right now seems a very difficult one. In fact, it needs to come up with a revolutionary ideas to even stay in the market, let alone regain its past position.

If Nokia does go down, it is going to leave a vast gap, that wouldn't be easy to fill.

Although, things will most probably change for good. We have the highest smartphone users in the world, after China. Till now, we have always been receiving downgraded technology at very high prices.

But, as the market changes, we hope that all brands, whether it be Apple, Samsung or even Nokia treat us on equal basis with the global consumers.

Change is the rule of life. But with the smartphone market, we not only hope, we expect things to change for good.

Watch this space for more on smartphones.
