All about Google-Motorola Deal

The proposed deal between Motorola Mobility and Google, to takeover Motorola Mobility is surprising to say the least. Google was pushed aside after it lost a bid to get control of Nortel patents, which was won by Microsoft and Apple.

Google lost more than 6,000 patents in the bid for Nortel patents. However, it can get 17,000 patents in a single swoop if it acquires Motorola Mobility. However there does rest a condition - if the patent applications filed by Motorola manages to get through. All this could provide Google with around 25,000 patents that is actually great for the company. Both of them have much to contribute in terms of technology, e.g Google TV.

As most of the manufacturing giants have already made excellent patent portfolios and Google appears quite low on that, so now it has become important for the company to build up its own patent portfolio.

A recent blog post of Google's chief executive officer Larry Page states, "this acquisition will not change our commitment to run Android as an open platform. Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. We will run Motorola as a separate business. Many hardware partners have contributed to Android's success and we look forward to continuing to work with all of them to deliver outstanding user experiences."

Subsequently, the competition for patent in the smartphone market will be good for all, especially for the buyers as they will get to see only innovative handsets rather than the copies of one another.

If Google acquires Motorola then it can also become stronger in customer services, changing buyers perception of google from not only being a efficient product developer but also a customer service expert.

Motorola owns some major patents like wireless communication technologies that includes 3G, WiFi, GPRS, WCDMA, antenna design, and key smartphone technologies such as proximity sensing, location-based services, software application management, wireless email and multi-device synchronisation.

All in all, we would again say it seems like a great deal for Google, which can help it a lot to get a better position in mobile phone manufacturing.
