Expect Samsung smartphones with Super AMOLED HD this fall

If Samsung is indeed successful in releasing smartphones with bigger, brighter displays that run on it’s Super AMOLED HD technology, users can expect 5-6’’ phones this fall. This could easily be followed by 7’’ tablets by the end of the year.

The 720 x 1280 pixels resolution is achieved with the current Shadow Mask (FMM) lines and a tweaked use of the Pen Tile matrix. In many ways it is similar to the Super AMOLED display on the first Galaxy S. The resolution has not been achieved by the laser-based LITI production method.

Though the Shadow Mask is quite expensive, Samsung has been able to reduce costs through better uniformity and new materials. In fact, the Super AMOLED screens will cost only 20% more than Super-LCD ones and allow for HD displays.

AMOLED displays promise brighter, clearer images with less strain on the battery. This itself is a boon for any portable device.

Although AMOLED displays are hard to view in direct sunlight and the organic materials that make up the screen degenerate over time, Samsung has supposedly fixed these problems by various innovations including reducing the size of gaps between the layers of the screen.

The demand for AMOLED screens is high and if Samsung is indeed increasing the production of the screens, the smartphones market is in for something big.

The Korean manufacturer is set to make big profits too. Rumour has it that the first phones to carry the Super AMOLED HD display might be the GT-I9220 with a 5.3’’ screen and the Nexus Prime.

Samsung will most likely unveil its newest invention in the coming weeks and we’ll be watching and waiting!
