The ASUS Transformer tablet was well received when it was originally launched in India. It had a 1 GHz dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and was retailed competitively. In fact, even now it is one of the best Honeycomb tablets in the market. Its feature is its keyboard dock which converts it into a notebook, making typing a breeze and improving battery life.
The next generation ASUS Transformer 2 promises to be a faster, more efficient device especially since it is backed by the ‘super’ powerful NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor. The new age quad-core processor, code named Kal El, is thus named after Superman’s birth name and is the first such processor for ultra portable devices like smartphones and tablets.
In fact, the Tegra 3 processor has more computational power than the Core 2 Duo run by Intel. The architecture keeps running temperatures cooler and offers efficiency with a prolonged battery life. Moreover, the keyboard dock helps conserve battery on this version of the Transformer too.
The Kal El powered tablet will most likely sport dimensions of 7x10x0.5 and include a 10.1’’ display with a pixel density of 1200x800. Most tablets in the market today are similar to each other, differing only aesthetically, since almost all of them run on Tegra 2 processors. Most have I GB of RAM and between 8, 16 or 32 GB of storage space. Tablet users have thus been waiting for the next best thing for a while now.
With the ASUS Transformer 2 on its way, the wait finally looks like it is over. The ‘super’ device may well hit the Indian markets as early as October 2011 and will probably be priced competitively at about INR 18,200. Even if it does take slightly longer, with all that the Transformer 2 and Tegra 3 have to offer, the wait will most definitely be worth it!
