Apple is setting its sights on conquering the low to mid range smartphone markets in emerging economies of the world. Asia Pacific specifically can boost the company’s profits by millions and since consumers of low/mid priced smartphones outnumber those of high-end models in the region, it seems logical that Apple customises the iPhone 4 to meet demand.
Apple is getting ready to give players like Nokia a run for their money with the smaller, cheaper iPhone 4.
By tweaking the specs of the original iPhone 4, Apple will be able to lower the manufacturing cost of the new phones and retail them for almost as low as $200 (Rs 10,000). One way to downgrade the specs is to reduce the size of the phone’s memory. Rumours claim that a South Korean manufacturer has already been ordered to produce units of 8 GB internal memory flash drives for the new phones. The manufacturer may even be Samsung.
The “lite” version of the iPhone 4 will probably sport a plastic casing instead of the original glass one. This will help reduce costs further. If rumours are to be believed, the phone will be powerful and fast nevertheless, especially if the internals are upgraded to the dual-core A5 chip set.
The question on everyone’s mind then is whether this tweaked version of the iPhone 4 will be available worldwide or will its distribution be concentrated in Greater China, to run with the world’s largest network provider, China Mobile. Apple has been in talks with the carrier for sometime now.
If like all new iPhone models, the “baby” iPhone 4 can run on iCloud, it might just be the next best thing to hit the masses. With iCloud, users can automatically and wirelessly store content and push it to their devices. Since data is accessible anywhere, anytime, the 8 GB memory will work just fine for the smaller, cheaper iPhone 4.
Though official comments are awaited from Apple and its collaborators, it looks like September is going to be a very busy month for the company, if it is indeed releasing the “lite” iPhone 4 at the same time as the iPhone 5!
