Blackberry makers RIM plans to launch own music service

Canadian Mobile Phone Company Research in Motion (RIM) is planning to launch its own Blackberry Music Service. For this RIM is in discussions with four record companies, Universal Music Groups, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner music Group and EMI music. This service will run on top of the Blackberry Messenger (The company’s instant-messaging service).

RIM has signed a deal with one of these four companies and soon it will close deal with two other companies. The test version of this service will be rolled out within the next few weeks.

The Blackberry Messenger Service (BBM) is an instant messaging service through which you can connect to all other Blackberry users who have activated this service in their phones.

RIM is undergoing a slump as the sale of its handsets has dropped down drastically in the past few years. Blackberry messenger is the only striking feature it is left with, which is still drawing the attention of phone buyers. The company has even slashed down the rates of Blackberry handsets, but still is not getting many buyers. If at all it succeeds in selling a few units, it could be attributed to the popular BBM services. Though traditionally, the music services are provided by the carriers, but now the handset vendors seem to improve their direct relations with the users, as RIM has found this music service an easy route to attract phone buyers.

The music service combined with the launch of two new handsets Blackberry Bold and fully-touchscreen the Blackberry Torch with OS7 seem to indicate turn of events for the company’s market for good.
