Symbian Belle bears close resemblance to Android, but does it have enough to upset the Android market. We find out as Symbian Belle officially gears up for a release
Will Symbian Belle stand up against Android?
Published on Aug 24, 2011
Nokia unveiled the X7 and the E6 in June with both the handsets running on the newest iteration of Symbian, i.e. Symbian Anna.
More recently the company rolled out the Anna update for Symbian^3 handsets like the N8, E7, C7 and C6-01. User opinions suggested that the Anna update did not change anything besides the menu icons and some other minor flaws.
And just when users were sinking in to Anna, Nokia announced that the successor to Anna known as Symbian Belle will be launched today, i.e. 24th August. As the announcement approaches, people are beginning to wonder if this update will bring anything new to the table.
Potential buyers often compare Android smartphones with Symbian handsets before making the final purchase. And the Symbian platform sadly, hasn’t quite made an impact on the users. So it is very vital that Nokia changes this with the Belle update.
Google launched the Android 2.3 update also known as Gingerbread in December and hasn’t looked back since then. So it will be interesting to see if the Belle update will provide some competition to Android.
From the demo videos that have leaked so far, we can make out that the user interface has been revamped. Nokia has taken inspiration from Android in many ways, which is evident from the video(s). But to be honest, it would take a lot more than that to improve the platform.
Sadly, the hardware of the current Nokia phones doesn’t do justice for the tweaked user interface. But Nokia is set to change that with the new line up of Symbian Belle handsets like the Nokia 700 and others. But will these handsets stand up against the Android 2.3 running handsets? Well, that is a question which is yet to be answered.
But as of now, it seems like pretty hard work for Nokia in the coming days.
