Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs officially announced that he is resigning in a letter directed at the Apple Board of Directors, and Apple's thriving community. Jobs said that he would like to stay on as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee, to which the board has given green signal.

Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of the Apple's Board, commented "Steve's extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company."

He further added, "Steve has made countless contributions to Apple's success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple's immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration."

He also declared that Tim Cook, who looked-after Jobs' work as CEO during his medical leave, will be the new chief executive of Apple. The board also conceded Jobs' assessment, and decided Cook to be the CEO.

"The board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO," according to Levinson. "Tim's 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does."

Steve Jobs resigned in front of the Apple Board of Directors on Wednesday, and soon after that his role on the board, as well as Cook's election to the board, both were made effective same day.

We had been hearing about Jobs health issues, but in the public letter issued yesterday, Jobs refrains from making any reference to his current medical condition.
