Microsoft confirms Mango support for front facing camera
Published on Aug 25, 2011
Microsoft’s recent announcement has been well received by fans of Windows Phone Mango and has sent sceptics of the OS thinking. With a facility like support for front facing camera, video calls have become a reality for Mango users. Smartphone enthusiasts have been asking for an upgrade of this nature for la long time now.
A Microsoft executive's hint at a soon-to-arrive Skype integration has also got users excited. However, Microsoft is waiting a while before revealing whether the integration will be available as an app or as a later OS update. Either ways, the development is welcome!
The support for front facing cameras is an addition to the 500 new features in Windows Phone Mango. The updated OS already simplifies multi-tasking, supports IE9 and integrates social networking. Hopefully, all new devices loaded with the OS will come equipped with front facing cameras, making video conferencing almost as commonplace as regular calling. Remember earlier rumours of a Galaxy S II look-alike that was supposed to run on Windows Phone Mango and allow users to make video calls with the touch of a button?
At the event in New Zealand, two Microsoft executives unveiled Microsoft’s Lync client for VoIP calling as well. The same is expected to arrive on other platforms like iOS, Android and Symbian too in the near future.
The front facing camera support offered by Microsoft in its updated version of Windows Phone Mobile might just be able to match Apple’s Facetime application, offering it a stronger footing in the premium smartphone market. With its final word on the Skype integration, Microsoft might just be able to give its rivals a run for their money. We are eagerly waiting to see what further innovations Microsoft has in store for us!
