Philips makes a comeback in the cellphone industry with 6 new phones rumored to be releasing tomorrow
Published on Sep 6, 2011
According to Mobile Indian, electronics giant Philips is launching a series of touchscreen feature phones tomorrow. These include three bar phones and two dual-SIM phones. Going by the report, Philips might also launch a smartphone next month although the month for the launch was misprinted as August.
Philips renounced the Indian cellphone industry some 10 years ago. Although Letsgomobile.com’s U.S. page enlists 40 Philips handsets, none of these have yet released in India. Six of these are making an advent in India.
The two dual-SIM phones are the X806 Black and the X518 Black. The X806 would be sporting a 3-inch touchscreen display and a 5-megapixel auto focus camera with Flash. It would be supported by a powerful 1530 mAh battery that is touted to offer a month of standby support and 70 hours of music play back.
The X518 Black would be a smaller dual-SIM device with a 2.8-inch screen and a 2-megapixel camera. It would offer up to 12 hrs. of talktime and a month of standby time.
Philips cellphones would use a technology called Xenium that would allow the phone to use negligible battery in the standby mode.
Philips is making an advent into one of the biggest cellphones markets in the world. Slated to reach around 1 billion consumers, the Indian cellphone market is both diverse and dynamic. In the last 10 years it has made a 360-degree turn to come out with budget smartphones, feature phones and what not.
Along with that, Indian consumers no longer rely only on foreign brands to provide them with quality phones. Indian mobile companies such as Spice and Micromax have come out with phones that are both India-centric and affordable.
With such a diverse market dynamic, Philips’ comeback is being watched with eager eyes.
