Nokia starts shipping the 700 and 701

Published on Sep 15, 2011

Nokia has been trying hard to get back into the smartphone biz and has had little success. Given the success of Android and the iPhones, it has been an uphill task for Nokia all along.

But the company has not given up yet and is trying everything possible to get right back on top. With the recent arrival of Symbian Anna smartphones like the Nokia X7 and the E6, the company has tried to make a comeback of sorts. Nokia however didn’t want to wait for the customers to get used to Anna and announced that the Belle update is coming up soon.

And now Nokia has started shipping the handsets that will debut the Belle platform. The Nokia 700 and 701 will be the first handsets to come out with the Belle update.

The company gave out this info through a tweet sent out yesterday. There is however no word on the launch of the Nokia 600 which is another Belle running handset.

The Nokia 700 is a small yet powerful handset with a 3.2 inch AMOLED capacitive display, 5MP camera and 1 GHz processor. Nokia believes that the 700 is the world’s smallest smartphone, which cannot be justified since handsets like the new Xperia Mini and Mini Pro are smaller and much faster in terms of performance.

Nevertheless, the Nokia 700 is a very petite smartphone which will be easy on the hands.

The 701 however is a relatively bigger smartphone, which according to Nokia is the brightest smartphone around. The 701 comes with a 3.5 inch ClearBlack IPS LCD as well as an 8MP camera with dual LED flash along with a front facing VGA camera. The processor however will be the same as the 700 clocked in at 1 GHz with 512MB of RAM.

The handset has 8GB of on-board storage, plus a microSD card slot for memory expansion. The 701 looks like a worthy competitor among the current lot of Nokia phones, and we expect the handset to make some noise when it’s made available.
