Windows 8: The new object of fantasy for tablet makers?

The recent demos of Windows 8 pre-release version running smoothly on Samsung Series 7 tablet have caught everyone's attention. However, the big question is how many developers will actually undertake the task of creating Windows tablet applications.
As per Microsoft, Windows 8 can run desktops, laptops and even tablets. So does that mean the Windows 8 version installed in traditional desktops and laptops will be able to run on tablets too. Well, there is no guarantee of it.
According to Computer World, doubts have been raised whether Windows 8 will be able to adjust itself to different tablets configurations, screen sizes, resolutions, and touchscreen interfaces. And will it be able to function smoothly when the same tablet will be connected to a keyboard or mouse?
For app developers all over the world, these are two of the many questions that are holding them back from exploring the idea of creating Windows apps, aggressively. The fact that how Windows 8 fares in next few months post launch in tablet market holds the answer to all these questions.
Even though Win 8 launch is still a year away, no app vendor would like to play the waiting game. This accounts for the mixed reaction that market has been witnessing of late.
But one thing can be said with absolute surety, that next few years are extremely important for Microsoft. The company has been promoting Windows 8 as a unique OS that will unify the traditional computing and tablet platforms. However, their prime focus has been tablet market. And if they fail to appease desktop and laptop users, even if they fare decently in tablet space, there will be no saving them.
For the obvious reason that traditional computing space still has some years to live.
