The most obvious feature that sets the Sony Tablet S apart from other tablets is its wedge like design that the company compares to a handheld, folded up paperback or newspaper. Even when kept down, the angle at which the device rests gets rid of glare, making it effortless to view the display and type on the onscreen keyboard.

Apart from the outer casing, Techrepublic found that the Sony Tablet S has another protective plastic frame inside. This frame keeps the internals, including the battery, of the device out of harms way. Standard Phillips screws hold the outer cover in place and can be removed easily. In fact, users can open up the external cover and change the 5000 mAh Li-ion battery themselves. Of course, opening the second internal frame is not as easy but isn’t impossible either.

There is a slot on the motherboard and in the casing for a 3G / 4G card, making the device ready for next generation technology. The front panel and the display are joined together securely and attempts to free one from the other might lead to breakage of the machine.

Tegra 2 has cleverly been integrated into another IC. Experts also discovered some chips that are not usually part of the make up of tablets. These include the IR remote control chip and an Audience earSmart A 1026 Voice Processor.

All in all, it looks like Sony has a winner on its hands with the Tablet S. Loaded with a dual-core processor, I GB RAM and two cameras, it is going to retail in 16 GB and 32 GB. An extraordinary machine, both inside and out, the Sony Tablet S is ready to take on the world.
