With Android smartphones currently dominating the market, people aren’t too focused on other electronic gadgets like iPods or music players (not for the time being at least).

But Samsung seems to be in the right mind set to change that faction, for the company has formally revealed the new Galaxy Player 4.0 and 5.0. The Galaxy Player has been rumored for a while now, and it is pleasing to see Samsung finally takes the wraps off the media players. Samsung unveiled these two devices in an event held in New York.

Speaking of the devices, the Galaxy Player will come in two variants as we already mentioned with just the screen size and the battery being the differentiating factor between the two.

Sadly though, the Galaxy Player will be Wi-Fi only with no support for 3G which rules out internet browsing on the go. But to be fair, branded media players like the iPod Touch do not offer 3G connectivity so the bar is not that high in that aspect.

Also, there is no word on the processor that these two media players are running, though initially it was claimed that it would be running on a dual core chipset. Both the players are based on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread.

The Galaxy Player 4.0 as the name suggests is a 4 inch media player with a Super Clear LCD display. Missing out on the Super AMOLED range of displays is somewhat disappointing, but the SC LCD display will do the job just fine. The Galaxy Player 4.0 also has a 3.2MP rear camera as well as a VGA camera for video calls. Storage wise, the G Player 4.0 comes with 8GB of storage with support for external microSD cards. Bluetooth 3.0 is on board and so is a 1200 mAh battery to power the Galaxy Player 4.0.

The Galaxy Player 4.0 is priced at $229 (Rs. 11,200 approx) which is very reasonable for a 4 inch media player.

The Galaxy Player 5.0 is an inch bigger than its sibling the 4.0 inch Galaxy Player. Even though the 5 inch Galaxy Player will be a bit large on the hands, movie buffs couldn’t ask for a more pocketable media player.

The Galaxy Player 5.0 maintains the plastic body seen in most Samsung devices with a typically slim body measuring at a mere 0.46 inches.

The Galaxy Player 5.0 also comes with 8GB of storage with expandable memory, a 3.2MP camera (with LED flash unlike the 4.0) and a VGA secondary camera.

The battery however is of a higher capacity at 2500 mAh which will keep the player going for long. The Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 is priced at $269 (Rs 13,200 approx).
