Apple’s iTunes confirms iPhone 4S?

The latest beta version of iTunes carries a reference to ‘iPhone 4S’. The internet is rife with speculations about the phone’s release today

Published on Oct 4, 2011

Apple recently released the latest beta version of the iTunes software to its developers. 9to5mac and Appleinsider found that the update specifically mentions an ‘iPhone 4S’, accompanied by a picture of the CDMA iPhone 4 currently available in the market. This leak has sent smartphones enthusiasts in a tizzy, especially since it comes just days before an official Apple event scheduled for October 4.

This development could well mean that Apple is releasing the iPhone 4S at the event after all. Since there was no specific mention of ‘GSM’ or ‘CDMA’, experts are of the opinion that the new smartphone is a world phone, capable of running on both systems anywhere in the world. The only other mention of the ‘iPhone 4S’ was made in regard to colour. It looks like the phone will be available in both, black and white.

Although the iPhone 4S was earlier slated to be a cheaper, simpler version of the iPhone 4, recent leaks on the internet prove otherwise. Apple’s new device seems to be a prototype, especially if it comes with an 8-mega pixel camera. Upgrades to the iPhone 4S might include support for HSPA+ as well. Rumour has it that the phone might be fitted with Apple’s A5 processor, the one that powers the iPad 2. All these details point to changes in internal design and functionality, leaving the external look of the phone as it is.

Though this development is exciting, fans are wondering where it leaves the iPhone 5. Will the two smartphones release together or will the iPhone 5 be pushed back to 2012? The clock is ticking; Apple will spill the beans in just a few hours.
