Apple has stunned the world once again by launching an iPhone 4S instead of an iPhone 5 at the Let’s talk iPhone event
Published on Oct 5, 2011
We were waiting with bated breaths for Apple to announce its new iPhone – the iPhone 5 at the ‘lets talk iPhone’ event. But, Apple had a different plan in mind. Instead of the iPhone 5, Apple launched the iPhone 4S, the new iPod Touch and the new iPod Nano, once again holding us by surprise.
While the Apple iPhone is definitely a new iPhone, it is not what we were expecting the iPhone 5 to be. It looks quite similar to the previous iPhone – the iPhone 4, in terms of its form factor. It is endowed with the same body along with a 3.5-inch screen. Along with that it, comes with an 8-megapixel camera.
The iPhone 4S is a major revamp in terms of software. It comes loaded with Apple’s new operating system – the iOS 5. The iOS 5, along with offering new apps such as newsstand, also offers a better UI, a video editing software, but most of all, it enables the iPhone 4S to wirelessly sync with iTunes from the iCloud.
While it is an exciting phone, it is still not the iPhone 5 that most people have been waiting for. Apple seems to have really thrown many people off-track by launching the iPhone 4S instead of the iPhone 5. After an year and a half of anticipation, the iPhone 4S seems just not what we have been waiting for.
Know Your Mobile provides you the top 5 reasons for Apple releasing the iPhone 4S instead of the iPhone 5:
Carrier Contracts
Carrier contracts are considered the major reason for the launch of iPhone 4S. In countries like the U.S. or even India, the iPhone 4 was available with contracts. People who bought the iPhone wouldn’t have been able to overstep their contracts and opt for an iPhone 5. Therefore, Apple offered a different model – the iPhone 4S with a budget price just to keep its hold on the mobile market steady. It had earlier done the same with iPhone 3GS.
Software
While the iPhone 4S comes with iOS 5, it still needs prepping, according to industry pundits. The reason behind the delay in the launch of the iPhone 5 might just be that the OS is not yet ready. Moreover, Apple might just be setting the groundwork for iPhone 5 by loading it with iOS 5.
Smartphone Development
Ever since the launch of the last iPhone, the smartphone industry has undergone radical changes. In the last one and a half year, many 3G, 3D and even music smartphones have been released.
A whole new segment of the smartphone industry has been opened called the budget smartphone segment. It is Apple’s tendency as well as market strategy to stay ahead of the race. It wouldn’t want to release a major phone lacking something that other smartphones offer.
4G/LTE incapability
It’s curious that Apple hasn’t named this iPhone - the iPhone 4GS unlike its predecessor – the iPhone 3GS. That is because currently Apple’s 4G capabilities are still in the development stage.
Unlike many recent smartphone, the iPhone 4S lacks an LTE radio, which Apple might finally pack in with the iPhone 5.
No Steve Jobs?
It is being speculated on the net that without Steve Jobs, Apple is moving into a crisis. Going by the iPhone 4S launch, it seems his retirement is finally sinking in. We can only hope that the next launch goes better than this one.
