HCL is one IT company, which we would call truly Indian in its approach. While HCL has performed quite well in the affordable PC industry, but tablet success has eluded it as yet. To make a mark in the tablet industry, HCL has researched hard to come out with its tablet PC – the X1, build to suit the needs of the Indian consumer.

The X1 is equipped with a 7-inch, 800 x 480 pixel screen along with a Cortex A8 1 GHz processor.  It runs on the Android 2.3 – Gingerbread OS.  The tablet comes with a 2-megapixel front camera, which is located at the lower front panel of the tablet.

While connectivity options range between Wi-Fi and 3G (via USB modem), It is also equipped with a 512 MB RAM and 3500-mAh battery.

But that is not all; the tablet comes with many Indian apps such as Hungama, Jeevan sathi and cleartrip. But, single-handedly, the most impressive feature of the X1 is its price tag.

Priced at 10,490. The tablet seems an attractive buy. Here are some tings we like best about the HCL ME X1 tablet.

Attractive Price tag

HCL’s price tag would be quite an apt one for the X1. At Rs. 10,490, the tablet with a 1 GHz processor, 3500 mAh battery and specialized Indian apps will give hard competition to other tablets the iBall Slide, Reliance 3G Tab and Beetel Magiq.

Indian apps

HCL claims that it has come out with the X1 after much research on the needs of the Indian consumer. Well, we can do nothing but agree. The X1 is equipped with a Hungama, Jeevansathi and Cleartrip app amongst many others. They have come out with the Think Free office and ME app store. The ME app store has consists of 10,000 pre-selected apps. While some might be disappointed the lack of Android Market, we think 10,000 apps are just about enough, if they don’t miss important ones like Angry Birds.

Powerful processor

A processor is the brain of a tablet. A powerful processor ensures smooth functioning. And a 1 GHz processor at the X1 price tag is one of the things we like best about the HCL ME X1.

Full HD playback and HDMI support

The HCL ME X1 comes with 1080p full HD playback and full HDMI support. Full HD support ensures that your videos can be easily and clearly viewed while HDMI makes it easy to connect to a PC or a TV.  We actually tested both and they turned out be quite a revelation for a budget tablet.

Sleek Design

The HCL ME comes with a metallic body and a 7-inch screen. It feels good to hold and look at. While the Gray color might not suit some people’s taste, we thought that it made the tablet look quite sophisticated. The back is almost as attractive at the front. You aren’t even reminded about a back camera when you look at it from the back. The ME icon on the back actually suits the tablet.

The front is an even more interesting story. The 7-inch screen seems good while a metallic button and a 2-megapixel camera adorns the lower front part of the tablet making it look simple and sophisticated. We would like to add here that the front-facing camera is mostly located at the top part of the tablet. But HCL has used its mind and located it at the bottom part so as to ensure you can video chat with greater convenience.
