Phandroid got its hands on an invite with the file name “spyder launch” that Motorola has apparently sent out to an event set to be held today in New York. Coincidently, a teaser on the Motorola website shows a countdown that ends at 9 PM GMT and is accompanied by a video teaser that promises users that Motorola is coming up with something “Faster, thinner, smarter, stronger”. It looks like the company is indeed ready to unveil its next generation smartphone.

Motorola’s teaser video makes numerous references to a razor, among other objects that are identifiable with “Faster, thinner, smarter, stronger”, setting the stage for the smartphone’s release. The new and improved Razr from the house of Motorola is the company’s answer to Samsung, Google and Apple.

A number of leaks and rumours doing the rounds on the internet have made a few features of the Razr known. Very similar to the popular Droid Bionic, the Razr takes smartphoning a notch higher. The Razr will be an android phone, but which version of the OS it will run on is still a mystery.

Motorola’s next big thing comes with a 4.3 qHD Super AMOLED display that promises a resolution of 960 x 540p. It sports the same 1.2 GHz dual-core processor that powers the Droid Bionic. The phone will offer 1 GB RAM, LTE support and 2 cameras, an 8 MP rear facing one capable of full HD recording and a front facing one that is also HD.

The device will have Android Market and a number of applications including those for social networking pre installed on it. The outer casing of the phone will be made of bullet proof material Kevlar, protecting it against all kinds of impacts.

If the teaser and invite are anything to go by, Motorola will indeed unveil its lightest, thinnest smartphone today. Also referred to as Motorola Droid HD and Spyder, the Razr promises to give some stiff competition to Samsung and Apple, though its retail price is not yet known. With all this action, consumers are going to have a very exciting festive season, thanks to the many smartphone options they can choose from.
