Nokia World 2011: Everything’s not fine at Nokia

Will it or won’t it? That’s what everyone is asking about the suspected release of Nokia WP7 handsets at the Nokia World 2011
Published on Oct 25, 2011
2011 hasn’t been the most promising year for Nokia. While Nokia has started recovering from the pitfall of losses in the first quarter of this year, good news is yet to pour in for Nokia, according to reports.
The net is abuzz with the news that Nokia might not release any Windows 7 handsets at the Nokia World Conference this year. In fact, people might not get their hands on Nokia Widows handsets right up till next year.
This is quite an about turn from Nokia, which had declared its Sea Ray would have been the first Windows handset. While we have seen Windows handsets from the likes of HTC and Samsung, Nokia is yet to wow us with one.
This might also be a bad omen for Microsoft, which had declared that it would spend $29 Million to support the Nokia Windows phone ad campaign. Added to that, Nokia might miss the whole holiday buying spree.
While we would like to see a well-made product from Nokia rather than a half-hearted attempt, it seems odd how Nokia might totally miss the gravy train with its Windows handsets.
And that’s not all; Nokia’s CEO Steve Ballmer had declared that Nokia would release a bunch of handsets. But without a Windows OS, there would hardy be anything on offer. Truly, no one’s looking forward to outdated Symbian handsets or budget ones.
Taking a look at a look at the event sheet, one can only make a wild guess that Nokia is to release two handsets. There are 2 options mentioned under the head of ‘Get to know the latest mobile products’, indicating that the ‘bunch’ might just be a pair of handsets.
The ones expected to release are the Nokia Sea Ray and the Saber.
What’s more? Nokia has already mentioned that it would have a session on ‘building a different kind of UI’ with Microsoft’s Joe’s Belfiore really giving us the creeps.
Nokia seems to have a lot to impart in the small event. One of its’ sessions is quite evocatively titled ‘From Black Swans to Purple Cows and everything in between – 10 things you didn’t know this morning’.
So, what does Nokia really have up its sleeve?
Well, noone seems to know as yet. If this is Nokia’s PR strategy to publicize its upcoming handsets, we won’t call it a good one. Whatever the event might hold, it might just be the changing point for Nokia’s fortunes (or misfortunes).
