BlackBerry Curve-8520 free with PlayBook

Research In Motion has recently announced that every PlayBook buyer will get a free BlackBerry Curve-8520 handset till 30 November. Whether call it a Diwali offer but it is an attempt of the Canadian giant to promote the sale of their PlayBook tablet, which was launched in the competition of Apple iPad, Galaxy Tab and Motorola Zoom.

The PlayBook, till now, has failed to perform in the market.  It might be the reason why RIM has to offer free Curve handset to promote the sale of their tablet.

But, despite such an offering, the PlayBook would still be considered an expensive tablet in a market which is loaded with budget tablets such as the Aakash tablet.

At a price tag of Rs. 27,990 for the 16 GB version, Rs. 32,990 for the 32 GB one and Rs. 37,990 for a 62GB models, we doubt that this offer would revive RIM’s sinking fortunes with the PlayBook. This offer is valid from October 18 to November 30, 2011.

While the offer is quite an innovative one, we would have appreciated, had RIM made the tablet more affordable. RIM has slashed the price of PlayBook in the US and the UK to about $200 (Rs. 10,000). India, however, hasn’t seen such an offer as yet. Being one of the biggest markets worldwide, we hope RIM addresses this issue soon.

So long, the PlayBook cannot be called a successful tablet. With iPad3, Kindle Fire, Sony Playstation tablet on the scene, the survival of the PlayBook has become even more endangered.

The PlayBook successor PlayBook2 is also in the wings for RIM. We hope it makes a better effort this time.
