In an interview with Bloomberg Business Week, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop suggested that Nokia was working on a new Windows 8 tablet. He said, “There’s a new tablet opportunity coming.” And added, “We see the opportunity. Unquestionably, that will change the dynamics (of the tablet market).”
The CEO did add however that Nokia had not made any official announcements about a forthcoming tablet. Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft is well known, thus it is safe to assume that whenever the new tablet is released, it will be powered by the much anticipated Windows 8. According to Elop, Windows 8 is a ‘supercharged’ version for tablets.
The world will expect a lot from Nokia’s Windows 8 tablet, especially since the OS has a sophisticated tiled UI with dynamic updates that is found on Microsoft’s Windows Phone. In fact, people used to WP will find the OS a breeze to use.
Besides a new and improved Task Manager, Share Charm and thumb typing keyboard, Windows 8 allows users to use touch and swipe passwords instead of a typed encryption. It also shows email notifications and calendar events on a locked screen and promises to use up very little RAM. The OS promises to be faster, easier and more convenient to use.
Though nothing more was specified by Elop and no dates were mentioned, Nokia is probably getting ready to take on Apple’s iPad by already putting plans in place to build a powerful Windows 8 tablet. If Microsoft and Nokia play their cards right this time, they might just be able to give Apple a run for its money. The tablet market just got a whole lot more interesting!
