LG Optimus has been one handset, which, even with superb hardware, has been devoid of good software. The handset makes a transition to the Gingerbread OS starting next week. The update will carry along some goodies from LG apart from the usual Gingerbread enhancements.

“These enhanced features included in our customized Android 2.3 upgrade will allow users to further integrate 3D into their everyday lives, as we make the technology more accessible and enjoyable on smartphones” says Dr. Jong –seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics.

The update will come with improved HSPA+ speeds ranging from 21 mbps, while the upload speed will also be a standard 576 mbps.

Along with that, the Optimus 3D’s 2D camera (1080p) will receive an image stabilization software similar to the one that comes along with its 3D camera (which records 720p 3D videos).

The Gingerbread update will improve the whole video recording experience with Optimus 3D’s dual cameras.

One more noteworthy addition is the 3D video editor, which would let the users edit videos directly from his/her Optimus 3D. Even the Gallery app on the handset has been improved to provide better startup time and longer MP3 playback.

The update is currently headed for European markets, but markets like India will receive it only by the end of the year.

LG’s gameplan with Optimus 3D hasn’t been clear from the start. While it is a high-end (priced at Rs. 37,00) and high-featured (3D user interface, 3d video recording), the operating system (Froyo OS), simply doesn’t make sense.

Also, LG has finally woken up to the possibility of a Gingerbread update when the next version of the Android OS – the Ice Cream Sandwich OS, is ready to roll out.

In fact, companies such as Sony Ericsson and Samsung have already started working on providing an Ice Cream Sandwich update for their handsets.

LG needs to catch up fast with Android updates. We hope it wakes up to the possibility of an Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Optimus 3D handset soon.
