Chinese handset manufacturer Huawei seems to have its plans ready for the smartphone sector. Its smartphone is ready for release and will hit the Russian, Indonesian, Malaysian, Singaporean, Japanese and Chinese markets next month with other markets following soon after.
The Honor smartphone is a big step for Huawei and seems a valiant attempt on its part.
It will come with 4-inch screen and run on Android Gingerbread OS. One of the most important features of the smartphone is that it will run on a powerful 1.4 GHz processor. It is expected to cost $300 (Rs. 15,300), which is about half the price of other smartphones with similar specs.
Along with Android Gingerbread OS, the phone will come with a Huawei differentiation skin called the ‘Huawei Android Platform 5.1’. Since the phone is releasing in December, it is highly probable that it might even get an Ice Cream Sandwich OS update.
The handset will be available in a range of colors including Glossy Black, textured Black, White, Yellow, Pink and Burgundy. But, Huawei has stated that all the colors won’t be available in all the markets.
Rather than bank on operators, Huawei is marketing the handset itself.
In terms of numbers, Huawei has already racked in impressive ones in the smartphone market. The company stands at the 9th place in the world for its cellphone (Both smartphones and feature phones) shipments, an impressive 10.6 million worldwide, just in the last quarter.
It seems Huawei is banking on Android for expanding its range of smartphones. It is working on mid-range to high-end phones.
Huawei has done the right thing by targeting Asian markets first. It is easier to develop a consumer base for a brand such as Huawei here along with an added advantage of a major market such as China already being the brand’s stronghold.
