AnandTech benchmarked the Galaxy Nexus last week and found that the Android’s ICS OS-backed phone performed well on almost all counts. As expected, it gave Apple’s iPhone 4S some tough competition.

Google seems to have taken browser optimization to a whole new level with ICS. On the Rightware Browsermark, the Galaxy Nexus scored 98272, higher than the iPhone 4S’s 87841. This is significant, since this benchmark measures browser speeds. On the SunSpider Javascript Benchmark too, the Galaxy Nexus performed better than the iPhone 4S. Its 1879 points were lower than the iPhone 4S’s 3350, placing it at the top of the charts.

In the GPU scores however, the iPhone 4S left the Galaxy Nexus behind. Apple’s latest smartphone scored 73.1 in the 720p Offscreen Egypt test while Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus came in at 29.3. Even on the Offscreen Pro test, the iPhone 4S scored better than the Galaxy Nexus with a result of 123.1. In comparison, the latter scored 45.2. Of course, the GPU in the Galaxy Nexus, SGX 540, doesn’t stand a chance against the GPU in the iPhone 4S, SGX 543MP2.

From the benchmarked scores, it looks like the two smartphones are head to head in their tight competition. Though comparisons between the phones have been drawn ever since their launches, the benchmark exercise has brought some finer points to the fore. In fact, the test has made the choice between the two devices easier for most smartphone enthusiasts.

Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus scored extremely well in the browser department while Apple’s iPhone 4S scored better in the graphics department. Depending on which of the two features is most important to them, users can now choose the smartphone that’s perfect for them.
