Putting all rumors and speculations to rest, Acer President confirmed today the arrival of its Tegra 3 powered quad-core Android tablet in 2012. In an interview with T3, Jim Wong confirmed that all the rumors and speculations surrounding its tablet plans were true.
“Acer was the first to follow Motorola with a Honeycomb tablet in 2011 after the launch of the XOOM and we intend to remain very aggressive on that front," Wong stated displaying its intentions to closely follow Asus' Transformer Prime, the only player occupying the Tegra 3, quad-core Android tablet segment.
This news also puts to rest Acer's plan to jump off the Android bandwagon as well as its plans to pursue the 'hot' Windows market. According to Wong,"tablets are a very important category to expand our business. We are the only company selling Windows 7 tablets in volume and next year we will continue to do the same thing with second generation windows tablets on the way in addition to our Android tablets.”
The exact date and pricing of the tablet has not been revealed. The device may make a appearance at the CES 2012 or the Mobile World Congress early next year.
Acer's next quad-core offering is rumored to be A510. Sporting a 1280 x 800p display along with a Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS, A510 will be powered by Nvidia's Tegra 3. There are also rumors surrounding a 3G enabled version of the tablet which is expected to be dubbed A511.
Apart from Acer, Lenovo is another company gearing up for a launch in the similar segment. The company is rumored to be working on a 10.1-inch tablet which will be powered by a 1.6 GHz processor along side Android 4.0 and Tegra 3.
Earlier today we had mentioned that the battle in this segment will not be a easy one. While Asus Transformer Prime will garner more sales number, thanks to its early entry, Acer and Lenovo are likely to face stiff competition, specially since baring the performance and design, most of the functions of a quad-core tablet remains same as its dual core predecessors.
