Sony Ericsson officially announced that the latest software upgrade for their Xperia line of smartphones includes support for WebGL. It has uploaded a demo video on YouTube that shows off the capabilities of WebGL too. This makes the company the first to support the WebGL platform for the Android web browser. Experts are wondering why Sony Ericsson didn’t mention its innovation when it released the Xperia software update a few weeks ago.

WebGL is a unique platform as it extends the JavaScript programming language to generate interactive 3D graphics within the web browser itself. This reduces pressure on the device’s processor by bringing down dependence on plug-ins and on the GPU. Phones including the Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia Ray, Xperia Neo, Xperia Mini and Xperia Pro carry the WebGL support. Sony Ericsson’s software update was made available for users last month.

The WebGL demo on the Xperia Arc S doing the rounds online tells the story of things to come in the tech world. With simple movements of a user’s finger on the screen of the smartphone, 3D images come to life. The video includes about a minutes 3D demo of the Sony Ericsson Logo, Walt Disney and Two Ninjas on the Xperia Arc S.

Sony Ericsson has been working to bring the WebGL support on to its smartphones for some time now and it looks like its efforts are finally bearing fruit. With a plethora of powerful smartphones out there, Sony Ericsson needs as many innovations under its belt as it can work on. It is with sophisticated features like WebGL support that it can take on the immense competition it faces from market leaders like Motorola, Apple and Samsung.
