Hacker brings ICS port to Droid Razr

Even though Motorola has promised its users that it will upgrade the Droid Razr to Android’s ICS OS soon, a hacker beat them to it

Published on Dec 13, 2011

A hacker who couldn’t wait to get his hands on ICS for his Droid Razr recently succeeded in running the Android OS on the handset. A video showing off the fruits of his labour is doing the rounds online.

The Inquirer found that thanks to Safestrap, the phone works on both Gingerbread and ICS. From the uploaded video, it is clear that features like the touchscreen work on the revamped device, though with two fingers instead of one. Even the widgets on the phone are easily accessible. Hard buttons on the handset work as usual too. The home button, pull down bar and tag buttons work fine but the ICS port is still in its early stages and needs a little tending to. Complicated features like WiFi need to be worked upon.

A statement by Droid Th3ory on droidrzr read, “We have a successful boot of Ice Cream Sandwich on the Droid Razr!! This thread will be dedicated to keeping you up on the progress we are making of porting it to the bad ass Razr. I will provide a list of working and non-working features, news, pictures and videos.”

Users can expect to see a lot of developments taking place vis-à-vis the ICS OS on the smart Droid Razr. With basic features already under his belt, the hacker will probably work out the complicated features of the phone in record time too.

Meanwhile, there is hope for those users who like to play safe with their devices and are not as bold as the Droid hacker. Motorola will probably hold true to its word and officially upgrade the Droid Razr to ICS as early as next month.
