Leaked shots of the first Xperia phone from Sony, Nyphon surfaces online
Published on Dec 14, 2011
GSMarena got their hands on some leaked snapshots and specs of Sony’s next offering, the Nyphon. Since the handset in the pictures carries only the Sony's logo and not the Sony Ericsson logo, it is most likely the first Xperia phone that Sony will release as a brand independent from Ericsson. Sony is all set to shed the Ericsson brand name by the middle of next year, having bought over the latter’s company share recently.
The Sony logo on the phone suggests that it will hit the retail market only around mid-2012, if not later. Not much about the phone is known right now, but GSMarena did hear some rumours about the handset’s specs. The Nyphon is also known as the LT22 and is powered by a 1GHz dual-core U8500 chipset built by ST-Ericsson. At launch, the phone will run on Android’s Gingerbread operating system and will be upgraded in due course to the Ice Cream Sandwich OS. The device will come with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.
Nyphon will sport a qHD display which will measure 4’’ in size. Its 8-mega pixel Exmor R rear-facing camera will feature a backlit sensor. The pricing of the smartphone is yet unknown but from the rumoured specs, it looks like it will most likely fall into the mid-range of smartphones. Experts are wondering why Sony is planning to come out with a phone of this sort, when it has high-end devices lined up for a 2012 release.
Maybe there are some unknown details of the Nyphon which will surprise Sony loyalists closer to its release. Maybe Sony wants to carve a niche for itself in the mid-range market segment. Either way, the tech world has yet another Android smartphone to look forward to.
