According to The Verge, the guys at XDA-Developers have used the source code of the Android 4.0.3 Build and made a bootable ROM for the Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi. Since Android 4.0.3 is the base version for the ICS OS, Google has recently added its source code to the Android Open Source Project.
The hackers have uploaded a video that shows off the ICS OS working on the XOOM Wi-Fi. In fact, its performance surpasses the performance of the Honeycomb OS on the Motorola device. The OS moves faster than its predecessor and users need only to swipe an app to shut it. Despite its superior performance, the ROM is not without a few issues. A number of bugs in the system still have to be taken care of.
For one, the camera on the XOOM doesn’t work with this particular ROM. Also, the Build doesn’t include Google Apps. These issues, among others, should be resolved in the next few days.
Since its source code is easily accessible on Google’s Android Open Source Project, Android 4.0.3 is sure to make its way to devices across manufacturers in the coming weeks. As The Verge reports, Google developer Jean-Baptiste Query said about the build, “This version of Android is optimized for a wide range of devices”. He also claims that it is Google’s ‘best release ever’.
It seems then that users itching to get their hands on the ICS update for their smartphones and tablets won’t have to wait too long. In fact, it looks like Ice Cream Sandwich is all set to take over the tech world next year. Apple and Microsoft, are you listening?
