Google suspends Ice Cream Sandwich update for Nexus S midway

High CPU usage and battery bug force Google to pull out the Android 4.0 upgrade

Published on Dec 20, 2011

The Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Nexus S smartphone had begun rolling out officially some time ago, but it seems that off late Google has been facing some issues with the upgrade and has had to suspend it midway.

Users of the Nexus S have been noticing hiked CPU usage and short battery lives on their devices despite minimal use. Due to these two issues, which are most likely related, users have had to recharge their phones often. Since this is a major inconvenience, Google is said to be working around the clock to fix the problems. Once these issues are resolved, the update will most likely be made available to users once again.

According to phandroid, Nexus S users are not the only ones facing battery and power issues on their smartphones. Apparently, users of the popular Galaxy Nexus have a few issues with their devices as well. The battery of the Galaxy Nexus drains out quickly, even if the phone is not used too much. Some experts are of the belief that a kernel driver issue is keeping the phone awake at all times and subsequently eating away the battery. For the phone to remain awake in this way, the screen doesn’t even need to be on.

Hopefully Google will find a fix for the battery issue soon, especially since a number of devices are in line for the OS update in the coming months.

Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich is one of the few operating systems in the tech world that can compete directly with Apple’s iOS. What’s more, it is capable of penetrating the market deeply since Android is available on devices across manufacturers. It will be a shame then, if it is unable to perform as well as it is expected to.
