Samsung confirms Android 4.0 update for Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note

Published on Dec 21, 2011

Samsung has confirmed that its Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note handsets will be getting updated to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) in Q1 of 2012.

Most of Samsung’s dual core devices will get the upgrade in the near future as well. Though details on the time frame for other devices are sketchy.

Other devices that are in line for the upgrade include the Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy R, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus.

The initial list does not include Samsung’s Hummingbird single core devices. These gadgets may be on hold because of their TouchWiz screens.

According to Phandroid, Samsung might be talking a while to figure out how to make TouchWiz work with the ICS platform. It is interesting though that the Nexus S, which is powered by the same chipset, is getting an upgrade in some countries.

Though most of Samsung’s gadgets will move to the ICS OS in time, when they do is also dependent on the carriers which sell the phones under contracts, especially in the Western world.

Devices cannot receive upgrades to new operating systems untill they gain the service providers’ approval. Fortunately, Indian consumers should be spared all the confusion and given the upgrade in the next few months.

With an early Android 4.0 upgrade, Samsung is going to give competitors like Apple some tough competition in the coming year.
