Gesture phones – or touchless smartphones – will be here by mid-2012

Gesture-based smartphones will be a reality next year, claims report.
A small company from Israel is set to create a revolution in mobile technology. Known as XTR3D, the company is gearing up to bring a technology that will enable you to control your phones with just gestures.
XTR3D is walking on the steps of Microsoft’s Kinect, which took gaming experience and fun to another level. But unlike Kinect it will not require special cameras to analyse hand movements, it will work with 2D cameras that will extract 3D out of it.
Now the idea of working with 2D camera sounds good because this will not increase the cost of your smartphone. However the battery is expected to take a beating.
Hopefully manufacturers planning to invest in this software solution will work on battery issues of the phones.
Dor Givon, XTR3D's founder and chief technical officer, said:
“It is possible to play a proper Kinect game on a regular laptop that has the software, touchlessly controlling the device from a distance of a few centimeters to up to 5m away. Controlling the TV without a remote would eliminate the need to look for it. "
He further added: "our target is to penetrate the market, so it will be something for everyone to try out."
The company has just received a five million investment, to launch the motion based technology as early as 2012.
