Hackers test Android 4.0 on the Droid, with less than exciting results

Published on Dec 22, 2011

A video showcasing the efforts of some enterprising guys over at XDA Developers is doing the rounds on the internet. These developers are testing the Android 4.0 build on the older Motorola Droid. Though they have been able to successfully port the build on to the smartphone, the results have not completely lived up to their expectations.

According to The Verge, this is a pre-alpha release based on Android 4.0.3 and CyanogenMod 9 and some of the key features of the build are not working. Currently, the build isn’t able to connect to the camera or the external speakers. Even the screen rotation is not working too well. The developers are working hard to resolve the bugs plaguing the system though and since the release of the build, they have succeeded in solving more than a few problems.

The uploaded video shows the original Droid using the ICS OS successfully to perform at least a few basic functions. Among other things, it is able to connect to the internet using Wi-Fi. The user in the video goes over the home screen, widgets and apps on the phone and then carries on to the settings, proving that the device is indeed running on the Android 4.0.3 build.

The development of the ICS build for the older Droid isn’t too bad, but it’s not as exciting as the development for newer, more sophisticated devices. That has to do with the device itself, especially how well it accepts the new build. Still, the enthusiasts at XDA Developers are working hard to make it work as best as it can. Droid users wanting to get their hands on the ICS platform for their older phones may just get lucky in the next few days.
