Microsoft is working on some big upgrades to its maps and gaming applications

Published on Dec 27, 2011

According to a report in Microsoft News, the company has applied for some new patents that promise to take the consumer experience to a whole new level.

Microsoft is apparently working on features like hybrid maps and integrated media and gaming experiences.

The tech major’s new and improved maps will include embedded street-side images, in addition to the usual features.

A computer-implemented architecture will generate a hybrid map that combines an orthographic projection map with street side images. Users will be able to get a complete, real-life like picture of a map with this technology and will be able to easily access local, as well as global, features.

The best part about the new detailed maps is that they will still be printable, just like conventional maps.

The company is also working on a technology that will allow users to record content on a gaming console through a digital video recorder or DVR working with a TV.

Users will be able to record media content while playing games on a console and even when the console is turned off. Content that can be recorded in this manner ranges from TV programmes and DVDs to games played online or on a console.

With Microsoft’s new patent, users will be able to get their hands on gaming and media content anytime, anywhere.

A game hosting service that is being developed by Microsoft too is capable of accessing a gamers attributes and finding a suitable opponent for a match.

The service will take into consideration the users own preferences and based on both these and his attributes, it will set up a gaming session with someone who has similar preferences and skills.

With all these sophisticated new features under Microsoft’s belt, it looks like the tech major’s loyalists have a lot to look forward to in the coming years. Once the patents are in place, hopefully Microsoft will not lose any time in bringing its exciting new features to its Windows platform on phones, tablets and laptops.
