Poor sales have forced RIM to slash the price of its PlayBook tablet by 50 per cent

Published on Dec 28, 2011

RIM has slashed the price of its PlayBook slate by 50 per cent, following poor sales and consumer perception of the device.

Even after 8 months since it launched RIM was unable to sell 1 million tablets globally, whereas Apple sold more than 11 million units in Q3 of 2011.

To increase sales and entice customers towards BlackBerry Playbook, RIM over the period has tried different schemes and promotions. This time around RIM has slashed playbook’s prices by 50 per cent.

Under this offer the 16GB tablet will cost Rs 13,490, instead of Rs 27,990. The 32 GB tablet will come for Rs 15,990 and the top end tablet of 64 GB will be sold at Rs 24,490.

The company, however, says that these new prices are just an offer. "We have announced a limited period offer for BlackBerry PlayBook. This offer is valid till December 31, 2011.”

The playbook has a 7-inch screen with 600x1024pixel resolution. It is powered by a dual-core 1GHz Cortex A-9 processor and has a dual camera set-up. The rear one is 5-megapixel and front is 3-megapixel and weighs 425grams.

The PlayBook will be upgraded to BlackBerry Tablet OS 2.0 in the coming year, which will finally bring native email to the device, among other things.
