Samsung confirms Android 4.0 Lite for Galaxy S, no ICS update planned
Published on Dec 28, 2011
Memory issues on older Samsung devices including the Galaxy S are making it difficult for the company to roll out its promised ICS upgrade.
Samsung’s bundled applications including its widgets and TouchWiz UI make it problematic to port the ICS OS on the Galaxy S.
Samsung’s solution is to replace a complete ICS rollout for the Galaxy S with a ‘vale pack’ that offers some features of the OS, but not all.
The Next Web came across a report that said Samsung was working to bring some ICS features to an Android 2.3 ROM in order to build the value pack.
The company will most likely import features like multi-tasking, improved surfing speeds, widgets and camera features to the Galaxy S pack.
Even though users of the smartphone are disappointed with the news about the ICS rollout, Samsung’s value pack might be just right for them, especially if they are keen to hold on to their devices for the time being.
The Next Web found that Samsung has worked on a value pack for the Wave 525 and Wave 533 devices as well, to offer them key features of the Bada 2.0 platform without a complete roll out. So far, it seems to be working fine.
The Android 4.0 value-pack should be getting rolled out in the very near future – most likely Q1 or 2012.
