The famous matchmaking portal shaadi.com has launched a Angry Brides game on facebook highlighting the dowry problem in India.
The game calls for awareness in the Indian society regarding the evil practice of dowry.
The game involves three perspective greedy grooms - a engineer, doctor and a pilot. Each have a million dollar price tag attached to them. The players attack the grooms with brick-red stiletto, broomstick, pressure cooker and other weapons.
Every time a player hits the groom succesfully, his value decreases and the money is added to the player’s anti-dowry fund.
Ram Bhamidi, senior vice president and head of online marketing for Shaadi.com, a matrimonial website with two million members said: ‘The Angry Brides game is our way of throwing a spotlight on the nuisance of dowry’.
He added: ‘Since we launched the game last week, more than 270,000 people have liked the app. Both men and women seem to be playing it’.
The whole application is a symbol of women’s courage and power and that is why the homepage of the application shows a woman in red with eight hands holding different weapons, which will indeed remind you of Goddess Durga.
Another thing that will strike you is its caption which says: ‘A woman will give you strength, care and all the love you need ... NOT dowry!’
According to latest figures from India's National Crime Records Bureau, there were 8,391 cases of dowry-related deaths in the country and 90,000 cases of torture and cruelty towards women by their husbands or family in 2010, reports Reuters.
