Samsung and Corning promise improved performance and strength on smartphones with next-gen OLED displays

Published on Feb 7, 2012

Via a new joint-venture, Samsung and Corning to develop and manufacture a specialty glass substrate for the OLED market under the product name Lotus Glass.

Samsung is looking to expand its base in OLED technology, having successfully experimented with it on the Super AMOLED Plus display of the Galaxy S II.

Corning, on its part, provides the backbone of the mobile display market with its scratch and break resistant glass casings.

With Samsung, Corning will work on a new and improved OLED backpane glass substrate. This Lotus Glass will primarily be used by Samsung itself but will also be available for ‘the larger Koren market’ according to the JV press release that GSMarena got its hands on.

The press release also stated that the new business will be based in South Korea.

Though not too many details are known about what Samsung and Coring will ultimately offer, the new glass substrate is expected to make mobile phone displays durable, with the ability to withstand rough handling and falls.

Of course, OLED or Organic Light Emitting Diode technology will offer crystal clear displays with high resolutions.

According to the official press release, the two companies will provide ‘outstanding product solutions for current and future OLED technologies, from handheld and IT devices to large TVs and beyond’.

For smartphone enthusiasts , this is great news, for it looks like Galaxy devices are about to get even cooler, offering high performing, unbreakable and crystal clear displays.
