Adobe announces Mobile Flash 10.1

Published on Oct 6, 2009

Adobe has announced the launch of Flash 10.1 which will include full support for most mobile operating systems - but not the iPhone

A host of mobile manufacturers are working with Adobe to implement full Flash support for handsets, with a beta set to launch on the happy side of Christmas. The first phase of the beta will initially roll out on Windows Mobile and Palm webOS powered devices and should arrive before the year's end. The second phase is pencilled in for early 2010 and will include support for Symbian and Android handsets. Astute mobile fans will notice that the two big omissions from that list are Apple and BlackBerry; the latter having announced “a joint collaboration to bring Flash Player to BlackBerry smartphones”, so it sounds like its on its way, just not as soon as we'd like. We suspect that the same is true of iPhone support too. Until now Flash support for mobile devices has been largely limited to custom built pages and apps that utilise the smaller footprint of Flash Lite. The arrival of full Flash will be welcomed by many , despite concerns that it could potentially lead to vital screen real-estate being taken up by Flash ad banners.
