Nokia introduces Bicycle Mobile Charger Kit

A new alternative charging solution debuts with the launch of the Nokia Bicycle Mobile Charger Kit

Published on Mar 17, 2011

Nokia has introduced a free and environment friendly electricity option for the mobile phones in the developing markets. The Nokia Bicycle Charger Kit consists of a charger and dynamo, as well as a holder to secure the phone to the bike. When the kit is installed, the dynamo - a small electrical generator - uses the movement of the wheels to charge the handset through the standard 2mm charging jack used in most Nokia mobile phones. Alex Lambeek, Nokia vice president said, "Bicycles are the most widespread means of transport in many markets around the world, so this is just one more benefit to be gained from an activity people are already doing. This is a great solution to a real challenge, whether people will use it due to limited access to electricity, or to be more environmentally responsible."As per Nokia, the charging times for mobile phones will vary by speed. A cyclist completing a 10 minute journey at 6mph (10 km/h) will produce enough power for 28 minutes of talk time or 37 hours of standby time. However, cyclists need to maintain a speed of 4mph (6km/h) to re-charge their handset using the kit. The charger and kit will go on sale for about 15 euros and will be available before the end of the year in selected retailers and Nokia online and branded retail.
