China's telecom equipment manufacturer, Huawei Technologies, forayed into the Indian handset devices market with the launch of new handsets. Prior to the launch, the company's handsets were equipped with many services offered by major telecom companies such as BSNL, Reliance and Tata Teleservices. Huawei has launched new handsets under 2 categories - Android and Hangout, which employ Qualcomm's chipset solutions. It is anticipated that the phones would be available for sale by August within a price bracket as low as Rs. 2,000.The U8300 and U8500 handsets are the new Android devices offered by the company. Whereas, the Hangout series Huawei mobile phones include U9130 and C5600 which are targeted mainly at the youths with social networking features. Huawei Device Chief Marketing Officer Victor Xu stated "Our offerings are based on partnership, customisation and value. Through the launch of these products, we hope to enrich lives of Indian consumers. With the Indian telecom industry growing of over 1.50-crore subscribers every month and poised to reach 100-crore by 2015, Huawei sees traction in the Indian telecom device segment. With our entry into the open market, we will continue to look at all the possible growth opportunities". As per government directives, telecom equipment manufacturers need to deposit detailed designs and source codes for all their services and products in an encrypted form in an escrow account, thereby enabling operators and security agencies to access them during any contingency. Huawei stated that they are informed about it and would comment only after reviewing the new directive completely.
