Samsung has launched the Omnia HD i8910, the first handset in the world to offer 720p video (1280 x 720) recording and decoding. Perhaps suitably then, it also offers the biggest AMOLED screen on any mobile phone, measuring a whopping 3.7 inches. The phone allows you to output your recorded video to an HD TV via DLNA. The phone's screen isn't itself HD, and we're quite a way off finding that sort of technology on the humble handset. Instead, it has a 360x640 pixel screen. The screen's size will still come in handy for video viewing, and Omnia performs well on this front with DIvX, XviD, H.263, H.264, WMV, MPEG4 and RV compatibility. If you have the capability to view your HD recordings, the Omnia's recording specs sounds strong too, resolution aside. It can record at full 24fps, while it also has in-built editing features including subtitling, audio dubbing and video trimming. You'll obviously seen a fair amount of memory to record in HD for any length of time. The Omnia HD will come in 8GB and 16GB flavours, although anyone with serious video aspirations will want to make use of the microSD slot, which allows up to 32GB cards. The phone also features an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and a power LED flash and is a symbian-powered device. The Omnia HD i8910 will be available from Q2 2009.
