Even as the economic meltdown continue to take a toll on the global handset market which resulted in a disturbed bottomline of the the mobile phone companies’ Q4 revenue and with a further crunch anticipated in the mobile phone market this year, smartphone market remains unscathed and will go on to show a strong growth, revealed a recent research. According to ABI Research, more than 171 million smartphones were shipped last year, and the figure will grow as wireless operators seek to sell more data plans and manufacturers seek higher margins. The report titled “Mobile Devices Market Sizing and Share” said that in the smartphone race, Finnish handset maker Nokia, with its popular offerings like N Series and the 5800, ruled the roost with about 38.6 percent of the market last year while Samsung came at the second spot with over 16.2 percent of the market share in its kitty, thanks to the success of its touch-screen Omnia Further it was followed by LG Electronics, which had 8.3 percent of the market and Sony Ericsson which finished the year with 8 percent of the market share, said ABI.   Besides, Research In Motion (RIM) and Apple have claimed considerably a small share of the market with 2 percent and 1.1 percent respectively. While handsets like BlackBerry Bold and Storm have made RIM a strong contender in the enterprise buyers, iPhone 3G continues to boost Apple’s strata in the smartphone space.   Meanwhile, the beleaguering company Motorola came across as the worst hit company with it losing over 5 percent market share. With a new CEO Sanjay Jha, Motorola hopes to bounce back in the coming year, with Android-powered smartphones well placed on its roadmap.
