Videocon has forayed into the mobile services domain in India with the launch of GSM mobile services in Chennai

With their announcement of GSM mobile services launch in Chennai, Videocon is now the 13th mobile operator in India. However, the company plans to roll out its mobile services in key cities across Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Prasad, Maharashtra and Mumbai to assert its position as a pan-India player by the end of September.Venugopal Dhoot, chairman, Videocon Group said, "Although it may seem like the market is flooded with new players, the truth is that the teledensity of India is still only 46%. So there is a large untapped market that we plan to target with our attractive plans. With our target customer base of 100 million customers, we want to be among the top three players in this market in the next three years."The company, which has applied for 3G licence in about 20 circles, reportedly plans to invest Rs 14,000 crore over the next three years, of which Rs 7,000 crore has been allocated by State Bank of India and the balance will come from equity and suppliers credit. Initially, Videocon will serve about eight call centres where customers can receive help in 15 languages. Videocon has stamped its presence in the local mobile handset market with the launch of 9 new mobile phones. Also the company recently announced that its Videocon V1405 mobile phone has bagged the Product of the Year 2010 award in the ‘Value Phones' category.
