MasterCard has introduced a new MoneySend app for Blackberry. It enables all Blackberry users to settle their peer-to-peer balances by sending money to family and friends, besides making purchases from an informal vendor. This service would only be available for the US citizens. RIM's recent tussle with the Indian government over providing encrypted content in readable format would certainly put these services on the backseat. PayPal too, faced tough times in the Indian territory recently. This new app can be downloaded by the user from the BlackBerry App World. MasterCard MoneySend app is already available for Google's Android platform and Apple's iOS. Its close competitor PayPal also offers mobile apps that support all the 3 platforms - Blackberry, iOS and Android. Like PayPal, MoneySend is a person-to-person payment service. It is like a prepaid credit card, which enables the user to transfer money to and from his account. But both the receiver and sender must be registered users of the service while owning the MoneySend app. Some of the other features include viewing MoneySend transaction history from his mobile phone (iOS, Blackberry, Android) and simplifying the business or non-profit collection effort through the Request FundsTM feature. The PayPal service has a large userbase while the brand MasterCard holds credibility all over India. However, the competition between these 2 brands would remain limited to the US boundaries. Moreover, the user done not need to pay any usage surcharge or signup fee but it takes about 10 minutes for all new users to get registered from the desktop for linking the prepaid card to their mobile number. On the backend, the MoneySend service is operated by Obopay, which is a well-known mobile payment provider. ( via: Press Release )
