O2 offers all necessary information to customers for making a sustainable choice while purchasing a new mobile phone. The Sony Ericsson Elm has been rated as the most sustainable phone by the new eco rating system launched by O2. It outperformed all 65 handsets with a rating of 4.3 out of 5. These scores indicate the environmental impact of a mobile phone and helps people in leading a sustainable life and thereby evaluates the ethical performance of the manufacturer. The rating system was launched as about 44% of the consumers gave importance to environmental factors while considering purchase of a mobile phone. These ratings would be available in O2 stores and be published online from this week. Eco rating has been developed in close collaboration with handset makers, in partnership with independent sustainability experts Forum for the Future. It looks at much more than just CO2. With this rating, O2 aims at offering sustainable products and services to its customers. The scoring system, which is based upon the data supplied by manufacturers, considers the overall environmental impact of the device such as its longevity and energy efficiency; its packaging; how easily it can be reused or recycled. It highlights devices that enable people in leading a sustainable life by considering the functionality of handsets like providing software for planning journeys on foot or by public transport. Moreover, the rating system would encourage handset manufacturers to improve standards to remain competitive. In addition, it would enable the wider industry spectrum to play a significant role in the development of a sustainable future. "Billions of people worldwide are using mobile phones to organise their lives. We want to reward manufacturers who make efforts to reduce their environmental impacts and think creatively about how their devices can contribute to a better world", said Peter Madden, Chief Executive of Forum for the Future. "We know that sustainability is important for many of our customers and for the first time they will have the whole picture from which to make a full and balanced purchasing decision," said Ronan Dunne, O2's UK Chief Executive. "We are very proud that 5 out of the top 10 models in the rating come from Sony Ericsson and that our GreenHeart model Elm is leading the pack," stated Mats Pellbäck Scharp, Head of Sustainability at Sony Ericsson. All these initiatives form a part of the O2's Think Big sustainability program. (via: O2 News Centre)
